Richard’s Family was founded by Clifford Atterberry in Fulton, Missouri. Cliff understood there was a dire need for LGBTQ+ support in rural mid-Missouri, and additionally wanted a way to honor his Uncle Richard Buxton who had very little family or community support when he came out as a gay man. Richard died of AIDS in 1992, further convincing Cliff that a greater network of LGBTQ+ support and resources were needed in this area for the wellbeing of all folx and allies.
